During the month of September 2019, the University of Limpopo celebrated its 60th anniversary. Founded as the University College of the North, having gone through name changes and transformations, the university is proud to have hosted an inordinate number of luminaries, including academics, captains of industry, supreme court judges, and activists who played integral parts in the democratisation of our country. We spoke to University of Limpopo Vice Chancellor Mahlo Mokgalong. The University’s main celebratory week was from 9 to 13 september 2019, culminating in the installation of the former chairperson of the African union commission and current minister of cooperative governance and traditional affairs, dr Nkosazana Clarice Dlamini-Zuma as our new chancellor! Coincidentally, the University will also be commemorating the founding of the South African students’ organisation (saso) fifty years ago here at turfloop. At its founding, the first president of saso was elected; it was none other than the founder of the black consciousness movement and a legendary figure in our country’s history: bantu stephen biko. Several prominent alumni joined them during the week to share in the festivities, amongst others the second president of saso: professor nyameko barney pityana! University of Limpopo vice chancellor Mahlo mokgalong shares more with us on the week’s expectations.
