The keynote speaker at the recent SA Studbook Breed Symposium was Professor Darrh Bullock of the University of Kentucky in the US. OFM News’ agri editor Sabrina Dean spoke to Bullock about his address on mating techniques producers can use to maximise profit. Bullock shares the message that bigger is not always better. He also highlights the potential benefits of cross breeding to take advantage of raising the overall average of several different traits. He says you can increase production by 20% in a 100% heterosis (cross-bred) animal versus a straight bed animal.
