In conversation with Solly Msimang - Lesufi’s Apology to Ramaphosa Ignores Gauteng Residents’ Concerns

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi’s recent apology to President
Cyril Ramaphosa for the state of Johannesburg and the
province at large appears to be little more than a public relations
exercise, failing to address the real concerns of residents. While
international attention has highlighted the lawlessness and
deterioration in the city, Lesufi’s response has demonstrated a
worrying disconnect from those who experience these
challenges daily. His lack of direct accountability to Gauteng
citizens, coupled with Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero’s
silence, raises serious concerns about the leadership’s
commitment to effective governance and service delivery.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) has consistently called for
transparency and accountability within the Gauteng
administration, specifically advocating for lifestyle and skills
audits of senior officials to curb mismanagement and
inefficiency. Despite requests to the Ministers of Cooperative
Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) and Public
Administration, these measures have yet to be implemented.
Now, the DA urges President Ramaphosa to take decisive
action by enforcing these audits across Gauteng’s leadership to
prevent further decline. Without capable and qualified officials in
key positions, the province risks continued deterioration,
ultimately impacting economic growth and residents’ quality of
life.
