Dilapidated infrastructure, lack of medical personnel, medication and medical equipment has become a norm at many public healthcare facilities in the Free State and around the country. According to Free State Provincial Leader and DA Shadow Minister of Health, Patricia Kopane, the state of public hospitals and clinics in the province is appalling. This, after the party embarked on an oversight visit to the Bongani Hospital in Welkom, earlier today. Kopane told OFM News that a number of contractors have been appointed by the department to improve infrasture and equipment at the hospital, but by the look of things tender procurement procedures seem to have contravened. She says every unit within the hospital has to do with inadequate resources and patient are left to bear the brunt of lack of services. The hospital attracted much controversy and made national headlines when five new-born babies died allegedly due to Klebsiella. The Free State Department of Health is yet to respond to OFM News’ enquires on the matter.
