Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality Mayor, Olly Mlamleli has confirmed she will be addressing the Heidedal community on Sunday, April 29 to listen to their grievances and address the issue of land grabs. She said this today at the National Freedom Day celebration held in Bloemfontein. This comes after local police were called in to bar residents from occupying vacant land located in Witherow Avenue last week Monday April 16. The situation thereafter descended into chaos with disgruntled community members and police squaring off. Calm was restored in the area on Friday, April 20. Mlamleli says the vacant land residents were attempting to occupy is private land and while she supports the redistribution of land without compensation, she does not condone residents occupying private land.Sunday’s meeting comes after Ward leader John De Bruin told OFM News they met with the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality city manager, Katleho Mea, and members of the municipality’s intervention team last week.
