The South African Further Education and Training Student Association (Safetsa) is planning a nationwide shutdown of 265 technical, vocational and training (TVET) colleges if the Higher Education Department fails to meet its demands.
The association said that if government ignores its concerns, it will forcefully close all TVET colleges indefinitely from today.
Safetsa’s Yonke Twani says issues of concern to them include the delay of results and pending certificates since 2012, insufficient funding and delay of accommodation and transport allowances, poor infrastructure development, unqualified lecturers and student victimisation.
Twani says they have been liasing with the Department of Higher Education for years.
