The Department of Justice and Correctional Services has launched an investigation into the death of an elderly man who killed himself with a firecracker in a municipal court in Pretoria yesterday.
The 76-year old man had been summoned to the Visagie Street Municipal Court to attend a case concerning a protection order.
According to a statement from the Tswane Metro Police, witnesses saw him standing in the passage and taking something that they thought was a cigarette at the time. The man put the object in his mouth, lit it and it blew up in his face. He died on the scene.
Justice Ministry spokesperson, Mthunzi Mhaga says it not clear at this stage why the man, who may not yet be identified, chose to take his life.
