The Northern Cape provincial government and organised agriculture have come together in a bid to help farmers affected by veld fires in the Middlepos and Calvinia areas in the Namakwa District.

The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development together with organised agriculture have dispatched about 20 tonnes of fodder from the Upington fodder Bank.

Department spokesperson, Phemelo Manankong, says an estimated 40 000 to 50 000 hectares of land were destroyed in veld fires last week, thought to have been caused by an Eskom transformer.

He says while a preliminary assessment has indicated there were no human injury or loss of livestock as a result of the fires, a comprehensive assessment will be carried out by the department.
