SA's fall to third largest African economy was to be expected: analyst

South Africa’s replacement by Egypt as the second largest economy in Africa was to be expected, and in line with the country’s economic performance in the past year.

Wandile Sihlobo's comment follows the announcement by the International Monetary Fund in its World Economic Outlook that South Africa is now the third largest economy in Africa. Nigeria remains the biggest economy.

Sihlobo says the move proves that the South African economy is facing some serious challenges.

He says there are however opportunities for growth that must be reaped, particularly in the agriculture sector.
