North West Education Department in spotlight again

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in North West will lay a complaint with the SA Human Rights Commission today over the Department of Education's alleged violation of children’s rights.

This follows the party’s visit to Duikerbos Primary School near Delareyville where it discovered that learners were exposed to unhygienic conditions, with 363 learners sharing seven pit toilets and are forced to drink contaminated water.

The DA’s North West Chairperson, Carin Visser, says Education MEC Wendy Matsemela must immediately supply clean drinking water to the learners via water tanks.

The Chairperson of the North West Legislature's Portfolio Committee on Education, Boitumelo Moiloa says the committee was not aware of the situation at the school. She says they met with the Department of Education yesterday regarding the challenges it faces regarding infrastructure in some schools.
