Cameras soon installed in SA prisons to deal with crime

Unrest in South African jails, such as an instance at Grootvlei Prison in Bloemfontein two years ago when inmates set cells alight and took some officials hostage, the smuggling in of cell phones and drugs, and escapes could soon a thing of the past as Correctional Services plans to install sophisticated security systems at all correctional centres.

The system will include cameras in prison cells and detection devices for cell phones and weapons.

National Corrections Commissioner Zack Modise told members of parliament yesterday that the groundwork for the installation of these systems has already been done.

He said the department consulted with the SA Human Rights Commission and the Inspecting Judge of Correctional Services.

Committee chair, Mathole Motshekga, welcomed the submission.
