Researchers say animals in the Kruger National Park are not just under threat from poachers who are decimating the park's rhino population.
Researchers from Stellenbosch University say half of the park's lion population in the southern regions of the park may be infected with a form of animal tuberculosis or bovine TB.
The University's Animal TB Research Group reports that the prevalence of bovine TB is estimated to be 54 percent in the lion population in that section of the park.
According to Professor Michelle Miller, around 40 percent of the Kruger Park's buffalo population, which are common prey for lions, also tested positive for bovine TB.
