Sona: SA's struggling economy must top Zuma's agenda

A political analysts says South Africa's struggling economy has to be the most important issue for President Jacob Zuma when he delivers his State of the Nation Address (Sona) tonight.

Zuma will open Parliament and address the country at 19:00.

Besides the Nkandla court case hanging over his head, Zuma may face fierce criticism from EFF MPs in the National Assembly this evening. They want answers from Zuma as to why he fired Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene, sending the rand into a tumble.

Political analyst, Richard Calland says the economy should however be top of Zuma's mind tonight.

Calland reckons overall, things will be tense. He doesn't however foresee as much drama as during last year's Sona, when EFF members continuously disrupted Zuma's speech, demanding that he answer questions on when he would pay back a portion of the state money used for security upgrades to his Nkandla homestead.
