Safety at the country's mines has been brought to the fore again, following the collapse of a shaft at a gold mine in Barberton, Mpumalanga this morning.
Initial reports indicated that more than 100 miners were trapped when a so-called lamp room collapsed at Lily Mine some time after 08:00. Mine management later said between 60 and 70 workers were brought to the surface and taken to hospital for treatment for minor injuries.
For the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), today's accident was another in a litany of accidents that the union says is cause for ongoing concern.
NUM spokesperson, Livhuwani Mammburu, says they're also concerned about an increase in fatal mine accidents.
