The Deputy Minister of Labour, Inkosi Phathekile Holomisa says all process followed were legal and above board in the wake of various injuries to employees at the Wood at Heart Project outside Ficksburg.
Holomisa was speaking at a press briefing at the Setsoto Municipality where government officials, the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) and former employees of the factory met to discuss the way forward.
The former employees claimed they were made to work in unsafe conditions and have no safety gear, among other things. Several of the dismissed employees are now disabled, the most recent being a 38-year-old woman who lost three of her fingers in an accident at work.
Holomisa says they will work with the Department of Environmental Affairs to ensure the 23 workers are placed in similar projects in the area.
The family of a deceased worker will further be compensated and the rest will receive trauma counselling.
