A tech expert says there's a chance in future that South Africans may have to pay to use Whatsapp.
It's estimated around 10 million South Africans use the popular instant messaging service.
This as the possible regulation of over-the-top (OTT) internet services, such as Whatsapp, Skype and Google Hangout, are set to be discussed in Parliament later this month. Last year Vodacom and MTN called on Parliament to consider regulating OTTs.
Arthur Goldstuck from World Wide Worx says it's a similar situation to that of metered taxis complaining about the introduction of the Uber service.
