Consumers been spoilt

South African consumers have been spoilt because our farmers are so good at what they do that we have not had to question the availability of food.
This is according to Agri SA CEO Omri van Zyl. He says the impact of the current drought could be a shock to the system:

Van Zyl adds that the whole of Southern Africa is also heavily dependent on the production capacity of our farmers as about 61% of the region’s food comes from South Africa.
Van Zyl says a task team comprising private sector and Government roleplayers is expected to finalise its research by the end of January. He says this will then provide a quantifiable picture of how to ensure we maintain our food production base.
Van Zyl says they are looking holistically at issues ranging from the impact on the agricultural economy, economy, job losses, humanitarian issues, the impact on food inflation, trade barriers with other countries and the effect on farmers.
Despite the challenges, Van Zyl is adamant that South Africa and the farming community will survive the situation:
