GUEST - Nkosinathi Mahlangu, Youth Employment Portfolio Head at Momentum Metropolitan
With election day this week - and with the arrival of new political parties on the scene as the ruling party's popularity seems to drop - competition is fiercer than ever as parties campaign relentlessly in an effort to sway votes. And while politicians post their shiny manifestos and are strategically photographed out in communities Doing Good, youth unemployment continues to climb, with more than four out of every ten people aged between 15-34 currently not in employment, education or training.
Has any progress been made since the birth of democracy 30 years ago? Are we too far gone to start to turn this around? And will the upcoming elections make any difference? Nkosinathi Mahlangu, Youth Employment Portfolio Head at Momentum Metropolitan, believes there is reason for optimism - and even despite the latest unemployment stats, he sees green shoots of hope on the horizon. The question is, how will the upcoming elections help or hinder us in turning the youth unemployment problem on its head?
