Innovation needed to counter SA’s youth unemployment

We need new ideas and innovative methods to get South Africa’s unemployed youth into the job market. These are the words of the acting co-Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Leanne Emery, who was speaking to the OFM Business Hour regarding the country’s 34,4% unemployment rate for the second quarter of 2021. The conversation with Emery comes as Stats SA announced that the economy expanded by 1.2% in the second quarter of 2021 with the transport, agriculture and communication industries contributing significantly to this growth. The expansion is based on a new reporting methodology adopted by Stats SA, which no longer reports GDP growth on a seasonally adjusted annualised basis and uses 2015 as its base year for calculations.
