Banking services ombudsman sees a 13% rise in complaints in 2021

The office of the Ombudsman for banking services in South Africa saw a rise in 13% complaints in the first half of 2021 as compared to 2020. The Ombudsman, Reana Steyn, says instances where her office referred complainants back to the bank in question rose by 40% in 2021. Steyn tells the OFM Business Hour, that her office does not know what is driving the spike in complaints. She says the vast majority of the complaints are fraud related: internet banking and ATM scams.
