Rumours of second #NationalShutdown doing nothing to assist commercial real estate

South African law enforcement agencies are on high alert amidst threats of another violent national shutdown. This news does not bode well for local businesses many of whom were ransacked by protesters during unrest in Kwazulu-Natal and Gauteng in July 2021. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Galetti Commercial Real Estate, John Jack, tells the OFM Business Hour that the commercial real estate space was already struggling ahead of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and the dawn of remote working. The recent civil unrest only worsened the situation further after shopping complexes and businesses based in commercial spaces were ravaged by violence and looting.
