The future of remote working lies in ‘the art of balance’

The South African Reward Association’s (SARA), Deon Smit, says the future of remote working in a post Covid-19 world, lies in “the art of the balance”. Smit was speaking to the OFM Business Hour, regarding the benefits and existing challenges to remote working, as well as the strategies that can be used to mitigate those cons. He says that the world will not completely do away with remote working, it will continue to exist partially and companies that want to appeal to young prospective employees need to bear this in mind.

Whilst Smit himself thrived from remote working and was able to get a lot done including his own personal projects, he says the tougher lockdown levels presented a number of challenges to businesses.

For one bigger organisations had a tougher time adapting to remote working conditions than smaller companies.

Smit also makes mention of the intertwinement of home and work as another challenge, one that many globally are still surviving from.

He says some of the strategies that can be used by organisations to mitigate these challenges is maintaining the company culture via virtual gatherings or meetings. Reviewing company performance measures and prioritising the mental health of all employees.
