Taal Monument launches competition celebrating Arabic-Afrikaans heritage

It's well known that the Cape’s slave community had made a great contribution to the Afrikaans language, as documented in the research by the late Bo-Kaap historian Achmat Davids. His research shows there had been texts written in the Arabic alphabet which, when spoken, sound like Afrikaans. In celebration of Heritage Month and the Afrikaans Language Museum and Monument's (ATM's) 45th birthday, the institution has launched a competition for anyone that can transliterate any short Afrikaans text into Arabic or Jawi writing.
