Battle of the badge: City of Cape Town’s cold war with the police ministry

In this jam-packed edition of News24’s Unread, devoted solely to crime and policing, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is poised for a promotion as head of the Hawks, inheriting a near-50% internal vacancy rate. Meanwhile, Crime Intelligence warns of escalating anti-immigrant attacks in Durban, so the police ministry rushes to the courts and gets an order putting heavy restrictions on March and March protests. Then, a Cape Flats taxi war erupts, while gang violence flares just days before the municipal elections. The former head of the anti-corruption unit IDAC, advocate Andrea Johnson, and ex-Crime Intelligence senior figure Feroz Khan, appear before a Pretoria magistrate in connection with a 2018 assault case. And in our special feature, broadcast journalist Graeme Raubenheimer investigates the cold war raging between the City of Cape Town and the national police ministry over giving metro police the power to investigate crimes. The DA has been promising voters this year that the city’s metro police will be the first to get an investigations unit. But how realistic is this pledge on the eve of elections? All of this expertly told in 15 minutes, only on News24’s Unread. Expect fresh shows twice a week. This show has been carefully produced, presented and edited by Raubenheimer, News24 visual director Wynand Louw, and video journalists Luke Daniel, Storm Simpson and Chelsea Ogilvie.
