KwaZulu-Natal anglers are enjoying one of the most productive stretches of fishing seen in recent weeks, with action being reported across the surf, bays, offshore grounds and freshwater systems. Spring tides, warming water temperatures and improving sea conditions have combined to create excellent opportunities for anglers targeting a wide variety of species.
Along the coastline, kob, garrick, blacktail, stumpnose, pompano and kingfish have all been keeping rods bent, while Durban Bay continues to produce consistent catches of grunter, kob and rock salmon. Non-edible anglers have also been treated to increasing numbers of sharks and rays, a welcome sign that summer is beginning to make its presence felt.
Offshore, yellowfin tuna have dominated the headlines, while the first dorado sightings of the season have added plenty of excitement. Reef fishing has been equally impressive, producing quality catches of Englishman, musselcracker, soldiers, yellowtail and rockcod. With warmer currents starting to push down the coast, anticipation is building for the arrival of more summer gamefish in the weeks ahead.
Freshwater anglers have experienced tougher trout fishing due to rising water temperatures, but bass, carp, tilapia and barbel are all feeding well in many of KZN's dams. Meanwhile, the Sterkfontein yellowfish season is beginning to gather momentum with encouraging early reports.
With outstanding variety on offer and conditions looking increasingly favourable, anglers have every reason to make the most of the next weather window and get a line in the water.
