IN CONVERSATION WITH LIONEL ADERNORF [TRC CASES INQUIRY SPOKESPERSON]

Loading player...
South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was established in the aftermath of apartheid to investigate gross human rights violations, give victims an opportunity to tell their stories, and promote national healing. While the commission helped uncover the truth about many atrocities, numerous apartheid-era crimes remain unresolved, leaving victims’ families without the justice and accountability they have sought for decades.

The inquiry involving former President Thabo Mbeki’s testimony brings renewed attention to the handling of cases arising from the TRC process and the state’s responsibility to ensure that serious crimes committed during apartheid are properly investigated. The central issue is whether the institutions responsible for pursuing these cases did enough to advance investigations and prosecutions, and what obstacles may have contributed to prolonged delays. Mbeki’s testimony is significant because of his former position as head of state and the questions it raises about political leadership, institutional accountability and the pursuit of justice.

For victims and their families, the issue extends beyond historical records and public hearings: it concerns whether the democratic state has fulfilled its responsibility to pursue the truth and hold those responsible accountable. The interview should examine what the inquiry is seeking to establish, what the evidence reveals about the handling of these cases, and whether there are credible plans to move unresolved matters forward. It should also establish what accountability mechanisms exist today and what victims can realistically expect from the process.
