Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are increasingly becoming a major public health concern globally, particularly among young people and those in the 15 to 24 age group. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that more than one million curable sexually transmitted infections are acquired every day worldwide among people aged 15 to 49. In 2020 alone, there were an estimated 374 million new infections involving chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and trichomoniasis. Many of these infections are asymptomatic, meaning individuals can unknowingly transmit infections to others.
The issue is particularly relevant for young people and students, who often face barriers to accessing sexual health information, testing and treatment. According to UNAIDS, young people aged 15 to 24 continue to account for a significant share of new HIV infections globally, while only a minority of young people demonstrate accurate knowledge of HIV prevention. Experts have repeatedly warned that stigma, misinformation, fear of judgment and limited access to youth-friendly health services can discourage young people from seeking help or getting tested regularly.
