Good morning South Africa. A major legal battle is unfolding in the Western
Cape High Court today as the Democratic Alliance, AfriForum, and the Institute
of Race Relations challenge President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Expropriation Act.
Signed into law in January 2025, the Act sets out rules for land expropriation
without compensation, a move that has sparked heated debate across the
country.
AfriForum’s CEO Kallie Kriel says this fight is about protecting every citizen, not
just landowners. He warns that ignoring property rights could lead South
Africa down the same path as Zimbabwe, where land seizures enriched
political elites but left ordinary people facing poverty, unemployment, and
mass migration. Kriel insists the Act must be declared unconstitutional to
prevent similar devastation here at home.
