
Illegal guns linked to 99% of firearm murders in South Africa

New parliamentary figures are raising fresh concerns about the role of illegal firearms in South Africa’s murder crisis. DA MP and Police Portfolio Committee chairperson Ian Cameron says around 99% of firearm murders recorded over the past four financial years involved unlicensed guns. He says the weapons come from several sources, including stolen or lost firearms from state armouries and transnational criminal syndicates, with millions of illicit firearms believed to be circulating across the region.
