In Conversation With Kingsol Chabalala MPL-DA Emfuleni Mayoral Candidate

A former senior official from the Emfuleni Local Municipality has been arrested in connection with alleged tender fraud and corruption involving approximately R16 million. The arrest follows an investigation by the Hawks into alleged procurement irregularities within one of Gauteng’s most troubled municipalities.
The Democratic Alliance has welcomed the arrest, describing it as an important step towards accountability. However, the party argues that the investigation should not stop with one individual, calling for authorities to determine whether other officials, political office bearers or service providers were involved.
While the allegations remain before the courts and those accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty, the case has once again placed municipal governance and procurement under the spotlight.
Emfuleni has, for years, been cited as one of South Africa’s most financially distressed municipalities. The municipality has struggled with mounting debt, ageing infrastructure, unreliable water and electricity services, sewage spillages into the Vaal River system, poor financial management and repeated audit concerns. Residents have endured persistent service delivery failures while billions of rand have been spent on recovery plans and provincial interventions.
