The Gauteng Department of Health says they've conductedthey.vehas conducted a review of information previously submitted to the Gauteng Legislature, in which it identified an error in the calculation of heart surgery mortality reduction figures.
Following verification using departmental records, the corrected data reflects a 34% reduction in mortality between 2023 and 2025, at CHARLOTTE MAXEKE HOSPITAL
The department says Verified mortality rates for adult cardiac surgery were recorded at 21% in 2023, 19% in 2024, and 14% in 2025. The number of recorded deaths declined from 38 in 2023 to23 in 2025.
This comes after a protest led by theDemocratic Alliance’s Gauteng Provincial Legislature representative Jack Bloom outside the University of the Witwatersrand, during which he called on Vice-Chancellor Prof. Zeblon Vilakazi to investigate what the party described as high mortality rates in the institution's cardiothoracic department. The DA further alleged that the figures previously presented were misleading and called for an independent investigation into the department's mortality rates.
