Rea Radebe from the Health Department unpacks the newly announced Lenacapavir treatment as a form of PrEP for South Africans. Lenacapavir is a long-acting HIV prevention injection given twice a year, and it is used alongside safer sex practices to help reduce the risk of HIV infection.

The treatment has been registered in South Africa and is recommended for HIV-negative adults and adolescents who weigh at least 35 kg and are at risk of HIV. Health authorities say it offers powerful protection, with trials showing very high effectiveness, making it an important new option in the country’s HIV-prevention response.
