Muzi Mthabela wants to break free from alpha male roles

Emzini star Muzi Mthabela says he is eager to move away from being typecast as the traditional “alpha male” and instead explore roles that centre on unlikely, more vulnerable heroes.

From Eshowe to Johannesburg screens, the veteran actor and editor reflects on his evolving craft, typecasting, and how impostor syndrome once made him question his place in the industry.

Speaking to Sowetan, Mthabela says his dream is to take on a leading role similar to Denzel Washington’s character in The Taking of Pelham 123 — a grounded, understated hero who carries the story without fitting the typical leading-man mould.
