Shark Explorers

For Stephen Swanson, the ocean has never just been a place it’s been a lifelong pursuit of understanding its most powerful and mysterious inhabitants. His journey began with hands-on research into the world’s top marine predators, studying seals, whales, dolphins, seabirds, and great white sharks across South Africa and beyond. This deep scientific foundation naturally evolved into a career where he could share that knowledge directly with others—bringing people face-to-face with the ocean in a meaningful and responsible way. Today, as co-owner of Shark Explorers (False Bay White Shark Adventures), Stephen leads from the front. Whether skippering the vessel, guiding guests, or overseeing dive operations, he combines technical expertise with a calm, intuitive understanding of sharks and their environment. His priority is always safety, education, and creating an experience that leaves a lasting impact. Stephen’s career bridges science and storytelling. As a co-author of 11 scientific publications and contributor to more than 10 international documentaries—including collaborations with National Geographic, Discovery Channel, and BBC—he has helped bring the story of marine predators to a global audience. One of his most remarkable achievements was playing a key role in a groundbreaking research project, where he placed a satellite tag on the now world-famous great white shark Nicole. Her extraordinary journey from South Africa to Australia and back over 11 months became the longest recorded intercontinental migration of a free-swimming white shark—reshaping our understanding of these animals. With decades of experience and a deep respect for the ocean, Stephen offers more than just a shark cage diving trip—he offers a rare opportunity to connect with one of the planet’s most iconic predators through the eyes of someone who has dedicated his life to studying and protecting them.
