Government has committed more than R1 trillion in public infrastructure investment over the next three years, with higher education forming part of that expansion. This includes plans to build new universities, expand technical and vocational education and training institutions, reform SETAs, and address long-standing challenges such as student accommodation and skills development.
Among the projects being revived is the proposed University of Science and Innovation in Ekurhuleni, first announced in 2020 and aimed at giving South Africa’s only metro without a university its own higher education institution.
