South Africa’s R40 Billion Hemp Opportunity
Background
A landmark study by the Localisation Support Fund, in partnership with the
Presidency African government office"], Industrial Development Corporation
(IDC), and the Department of Trade, Industry & Competition, outlines a roadmap
to a R40 billion domestic hemp market by 2040.
Since 2022, 1,725 cultivation permits have been issued across 29,000 hectares,
but limited processing infrastructure and fragmented regulations constrain
growth. With global hemp demand projected to jump from US$10 billion in 2025
to US$37 billion by 2032, South Africa has a chance to secure early-mover
advantage.
