British American Tobacco has announced it will shut down its only manufacturing plant in South Africa, ending more than 50 years of local cigarette production as illegal cigarettes flood the market and overwhelm legitimate players. The closure of the Heidelberg facility, operating at just 35% capacity, will see thousands of jobs affected, with BAT blaming an illicit market it says now accounts for as much as 75% of cigarette sales in the country.
