Jude chats to Zoe & Vusa Mazula on the SA & Indie Music Zone.
Vusa, originally from Zimbabwe and the UK, and Zoë, from the UK, met in London in 1998 while performing in different bands. After marrying on Noordhoek Beach in Cape Town, they immigrated to South Africa and created the Zula Sound Bar, a respected live music venue that showcased leading local music, art, and theatre for more than a decade. When they eventually lost the business, the couple turned to performing together out of necessity—and never stopped. Today, Mazula represents their original music journey, built on collaboration, resilience, and what they call “100% creative freedom.”
Their creative process is a natural partnership: Vusa shapes the guitar riffs and melodies, while Zoë crafts the lyrics. When performing as a duo, Zoë’s “mean mouth trumpet” fills the role of a horn section, adding a playful and distinctive element to their sound.
After 18 years of singing together, they released their debut album, About Time, recorded in Cape Town with producer and lead guitarist Willem Moller.
Now based in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, Mazula also channels their music into conservation. Their single Shoulders of Giants was launched to raise funds for orphaned and wild elephants, successfully helping build a new watering hole. Proceeds from the song, available on their website, continue to support elephant conservation.
