IN CONVERSATION WITH TEBOGO MASHILOMPANE

The Forum for South Africa (FOSA) has condemned the existence of 8,854 ghost
workers, describing it as a clear example of government negligence. According
to the organisation, it is unacceptable that for years government allegedly failed
to detect employees drawing salaries without performing any work.
FOSA says ghost workers are the direct result of corruption among officials, a
problem that has long been known. While the Minister has acknowledged the
issue, the organisation insists that more than words are needed. A thorough,
independent investigation is essential to expose those responsible and ensure
they face serious consequences.
“This is not a new issue,” FOSA stated. “In the past, non-existent schools were
reported to have staff on the government payroll, yet no action was taken. The
government must stop misleading taxpayers and take decisive measures.”
The organisation further highlighted that government systems are capable of
tracking employment in every department. The continued presence of ghost
employees, therefore, points to deliberate malpractice by certain officials.
FOSA is calling for full accountability and strict consequences, stressing that
taxpayers deserve transparency, integrity, and action.
