Today is International Literacy Day. The word “literacy” might sound academic or old-school, at its core, it’s about power, freedom, and survival in today’s South Africa. Being literate isn’t just about reading novels or passing exams. It’s about being able to decode the world around you. It’s about understanding a job contract before you sign it, catching the fine print on a bank loan, or spotting when someone is trying to scam you with a fake SMS. Literacy is a shield against exploitation.
