Deadly Hospital Attack Forces MSF to Halt Services in Sudan, Amid Cholera Crisis

Tragedy struck Zalingei Hospital in Sudan when armed groups stormed the facility, killing one person and injuring five, including a health worker. The attack unfolded on the night of 16 August, following a wave of violence tied to local displacement camps. A grenade was even detonated outside the emergency room. In response, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has suspended all operations at the hospital, right in the middle of a cholera outbreak. The team says it won’t return until safety can be guaranteed. Phemelo speaks to MSF’s Emergency Coordinator for Sudan, Liesbeth Aelbrecht, about this heartbreaking decision and the impact it will have on patients.
