Today’s guest is Mr Msindo Makhanya a waste picker from
Johannesburg and the Gauteng member of SAWPA. He speaks
from experience and leadership: advocating for waste pickers,
pushing for safety gear, and better working conditions. SAWPA,
established in 2007 and formally constituted in 2009, partners
with groundWork to unite waste pickers across all nine provinces,
offering them a collective voice, legal protection, and entry into
zero-waste initiatives. Mr Makhanya brings insight into both the
lived realities of waste picking and the policy changes needed to
shift their work from survival to respect.
