In the wake of Olorato Mongale’s brutal murder on Africa Day, May 25, South Africa has witnessed a disturbing surge in gender-based violence (GBV), with at least 11 women reportedly killed across seven provinces in just two weeks.
Mongale, a Wits University postgraduate student and former radio presenter, was allegedly killed by a man she met online. Her death shocked the nation—but it would not be the last. Between May 25 and June 7, the killings of 11 more women have underscored the country’s deepening GBV crisis.
