Former President Thabo Mbeki has defended the singing of the “Kill the Boer Kill the Farmer” song, saying it is just a chant, and doesn’t mean white farmers must be killed.
Speaking to the SABC in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Mbeki says he explained the song during the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings.
The song was also played during President Cyril Ramaphosa and President Donald Trump’s meeting at the Oval Office in Washington.
Mbeki says today, people are exaggerating about the song in an effort to push their agenda.
“It was a chant during the days of the struggle. And chants of that kind in an African tradition, you don’t take literally. At the TRC, to illustrate the point, I sang the song. The ANC policy was forever against the killing of civilians.”
He further stresses that the African National Congress (ANC) policy is against the killing of civilians.
‘Kill the Boer’ chant reflects struggle history, not hate speech: Mbeki
