International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) is observed annually on 16 May to honor the bravery, commitment, and sacrifice of firefighters across the globe. The day pays tribute to all firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty and celebrates the selfless service of those who continue to risk their lives to protect people and property from fire and other emergencies. The date was chosen after the tragic deaths of five firefighters in a wildfire in Australia in 1999, which highlighted the dangers firefighters face daily.
In 2025, the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) will host the Gauteng Provincial International Firefighters Day commemoration on 16 May 2025 at the Midrand Fire Station, underscoring the importance of solidarity, remembrance, and public awareness of firefighting and emergency services.
