Although last night’s tense White House engagement between Trump and Ramaphosa has the chattering classes in a frenzy, it matters far less than what happened subsequently. In his assessment of the 44 minutes of South Africa’s global attention, the chief executive of the country’s leading think tank concludes while it has the potential to be another step on the national path to recovery, the ANC may be structurally incapable of reversing its own implosion - and thus SA’s destructive slide.
