MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko to Open World Obesity Day
Summit on Childhood Obesity
The Gauteng Department of Health, in collaboration with Novo
Nordisk and the City of Johannesburg, will host a two-day
summit on 4 March 2025 to mark World Obesity Day under the
theme “Changing Systems, Healthier Lives.” The event will be
opened by MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu
Nkomo-Ralehoko, alongside Novo Nordisk Vice President and
General Manager, Sara Norcross, and City of Johannesburg
MMC for Health and Social Development, Councillor Ennie
Makhafola. This summit comes as part of South Africa’s
participation in Novo Nordisk’s Cities for Better Health Childhood
Obesity Prevention Initiative, underscoring the country’s
commitment to addressing childhood obesity, particularly in
urban areas like Johannesburg. With an estimated 13% of South
African children aged 6-14 affected by obesity, the summit seeks
to drive meaningful change through policy interventions,
improved patient care, and multi-sectoral collaboration.
Timed to coincide with World Obesity Day, the event will
convene healthcare professionals, policymakers, and community leaders to discuss evidence-based strategies for combating
childhood obesity. The World Health Organization has reported
alarming global childhood obesity statistics, with 39 million
children under five classified as overweight or obese in 2020.
Against this backdrop, the summit will provide a platform for
knowledge-sharing and the development of actionable solutions
to promote healthier lifestyles. Members of the media are invited
to attend and cover the proceedings at The Capital Empire PI,
Sandhurst, Sandton, from 09:00 AM on 4 March 2025.
