Tech Talk with Theunis : Microsoft says quantum computing is closer than ever

Loading player...
Quantum physics is the study of matter and energy at the most fundamental level. It aims to uncover the properties and behaviors of the very building blocks of nature. While many quantum experiments examine extremely small objects, such as electrons and photons, quantum phenomena are all around us, acting on every scale.
A quantum computer is a computer that exploits quantum mechanical phenomena. On small scales, physical matter exhibits properties of both particles and waves, and quantum computing leverages this behavior using specialized hardware. Classical physics cannot explain the operation of these quantum devices, and a scalable quantum computer could perform some calculations exponentially faster[a] than any modern "classical" computer. Theoretically a large-scale quantum computer could break some widely used encryption schemes and aid physicists in performing physical simulations; however, the current state of the art is largely experimental and impractical, with several obstacles to useful applications...Theunis Jansen van Rensberg from Bandwidth Blog shares news with Keeno Lee of Microsoft's new statement concerning Quantum computers and how close they are to building one of their own....
