NSFAS Huge Debt Crippling Universities' Programmes

Unpaid fees by student funding scheme NSFAS have forced some universities to delay maintenance, halt refurbishment of residences and reprioritise research projects ahead of the start of the new academic year. Several universities have detailed to Sowetan how escalating debt by NSFAS is directly impacting on their operations, quality of teaching, learning and research. Sizwe Dhlomo and Sol Phenduka asked those who have gotten support from NSFAS and haven’t paid the loans why they haven’t done so and encouraged them to settle the loans as a way to help the scheme (to paying it forward).
