Self-harm is a term that has historically been used to cover a broad range of behaviours. It refers to deliberately causing pain or damage to your own body, in any effort to cope with strong emotional pain and distress. It is difficult for many people to understand why a person would intentionally hurt themselves, or how that can be a way to feel better.
